Calipari "rooting for" Hawkins and Willis to play well next season

LEXINGTON — With both the platoon system and the top seven scorers from last season now gone, minutes will be up for grabs in Lexington this fall.

Two players who John Calipari expects to step up and take that playing time are returning juniors Derek Willis and Dominique Hawkins.

“I mean, each kid is different,” said Calipari an impromptu press conference at Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, “and [Dominique Hawkins] and Derek [Willis] came in on a different track than some of the other kids.

“But I’ll tell you what; they both have gotten better. They’re both great kids and great students, and I’m rooting for them. They know that. And I told them, ‘You better come back here expecting to play.’ I told them that at the end of the year: ‘You come back here expecting to play. Now, you go make it happen.’

“I can’t do it for them. They’re going to have to do it.”

KSTV discussed on Friday’s show the increased roles both Hawkins and Willis will need to carry next season and whether or not they’ll be up for the challenge.
