Calipari on Isaiah Briscoe's free throw woes: "Figure it out."

LEXINGTON — 38%.
That’s what Kentucky’s star freshman guard Isaiah Briscoe is shooting so far this season — from the free throw line.
It’s the worst foul shooting percentage on the team, and head coach John Calipari says it’s something Briscoe must figure out if he wants to reach his full potential.
- “Isaiah Briscoe, the way he’s shooting the ball at the foul line, it’s great for him,” Calipari said after Kentucky’s 72-58 victory over Arizona State on Saturday. “He’ll figure it out. You didn’t shoot 35 percent in high school; you shot 72 percent. How in the world are you shooting 35 percent? Figure it out. Are you just doing this so that you can play in the rec league in four years and five years, or are you trying to do something special with your life and yourself? Figure it out.”
Fortunately for Briscoe, he makes up for his charity stripe shortcomings by stuffing the stat sheet in other areas. Isaiah leads Kentucky in steals (1.7), is second in scoring (12.4), and third in rebounds per game (5.6) while also ranking fourth in field goal percentage (52%) among the Wildcats.
- “Well, it is affecting the rest of his game,” Calipari said of Briscoe, “but I will tell you he had four rebounds, too. See, not only is he defending, he’s going and getting balls because, again, we have other guys that are struggling to go get balls where you can’t win then, and he’s taken that on.”
Calipari says he trusts Isaiah will solve his foul line struggles before the end of the season, and added that being criticized for your weakness is nothing new at the University of Kentucky.
- “I’m not worried about his free-throw shooting. I’m really not. I mean, I watched him play high school ball. I saw him make 9 out of 10 free throws, but this is a tough deal coming here, and the laser is right on your forehead. It’s right there. And these kids are learning.”
