Cal's new contract: It's worth the money

LEXINGTON — According to multiple reports, John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats will soon finalize a deal to extend his contract by one year and increase his average annual pay to $8 million.
The deal — which puts to bed persisting rumors of an imminent NBA departure — would keep the Hall of Fame coach in Lexington through the 2021-22 season, and bring his complete contract to seven years, $54 million.
As if that wasn’t enough, Calipari is also in line to pocket an additional $1.6 million longevity bonus on July 1.
In short — he’s not hurting for cash.
Despite the high price tag, securing coach Calipari for the foreseeable future is the right move for the University of Kentucky, a cost that will more than pay for itself both on and off the court.
