LEXINGTON — Matthew Mitchell and UK Hoops kicked off the 2015 edition of Big Blue Madness in style with the help of some young friends.

After player introductions for the women’s team, Mitchell walked onto the court in UK warmups, not dressed as a famous singer as he’s done in years past, explaining he has decided to retire from BBM singing and dancing.

The sellout crowd at Rupp Arena booed, and athletics director Mitch Barnhart emerged from the crowd to demand a Mitchell dance.

A pair of elementary school students then joined Mitchell at center court to break out the “Whip/Nae Nae.” Mitchell said he met the students at a recent school assembly, was inspired by their passion for dance, and had to find a way to incorporate them into tonight’s event.

After the dance, UK Hoops split into two teams to compete in a three-point contest and two four-minutes scrimmages.

Missing from the floor was star junior guard Makayla Epps, who’s still serving an offseason suspension. Mitchell told the SEC Network broadcast crew that he’s “proud” of Epps’ “growth and progress” throughout the suspension, adding she’s on track to return for the regular season and expects her to be “one of the best players in the country.”
