Alex Poythress will return to UK for junior season

Alex Poythress will not be two-and-through. The 6-foot-8 sophomore announced he will return to UK for his junior season.

Poythress saw his minutes cut from around 26 per game in 2013 to only 18 in 2014. As a result, many numbers dropped for the Clarksville, Tenn. native. His shooting, three-point and free throw percentages fell, and he scored just 5.9 points and added 4.5 rebounds per game.

Even though his numbers don’t jump off the chart, his impact and decision to stay at UK will be huge for the program going forward. Experience, heart and a strong will to win are attributes that Alex Poythress provides, and that should not be overlooked.

Regardless of the decrease in production, Poythress had a major, positive impact on UK’s season down the stretch. Coach John Calipari gave much credit to Alex’s non-stop energy effort, and went as far as saying his dunks, blocks and rebounds willed the Cats to victories in the NCAA Tournament.

The front court is likely to be crowded and talented next season, but with the likely departure of James Young, Poythress may see more minutes on the wing at the small forward position.
