USA Baseball announced on Thursday that Kentucky’s A.J. Reed is the 37th Golden Spikes Award winner. The win makes Reed the third SEC player in history to earn consensus national player of the year honors, joining David Price (2007) and Dave Magadan (1983).
The Golden Spikes Award recognizes the nation’s top amateur baseball player. Reed has also been recognized as the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year, the Baseball America and American Baseball Coaches Association Players of the Year, as well as received the Dick Howser Trophy.
Oregon State’s Michael Conforto and Louisiana State’s Aaron Nola were the other finalists for the award. Reed was selected by the Houston Astros with the No. 42 overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft.
