Cats silence West Virginia 78-39, will face Notre Dame in Elite 8

03/26/2015 11:29 PM

CLEVELAND — The West Virginia players didn’t shy away from talking big during the week, but they got real quiet real quick once the game actually started. Guess the Cats got their tongues. Five Wildcats scored in double figures to lead No. 1 overall seed Kentucky to a 78-39 annihilation of No. 5 seed West Virginia in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night at Quicken Loans Arena. Trey Lyles totaled a team-high 14 points with seven rebounds on the... Read more

Willie Cauley-Stein says West Virginia made a big mistake by trash-talking UK

03/26/2015 09:26 PM

The West Virginia basketball team went out of their way to let it be known that they not only felt good heading into Thursday night’s matchup with Kentucky, but they expected to win. They even went as far as questioning UK’s effort level. And junior big man Willie Cauley-Stein said after the Cats blew out the Mountaineers that it was a huge mistake to do so.  Read more

03/25/2015 03:20 PM

Please explain: How is perfection not enough for Coach of the Year?

03/25/2015 11:37 AM

Apparently, being perfect isn’t good enough — at least not when it comes to winning Coach of the Year in college basketball. Despite leading Kentucky to the first perfect regular season by a power conference school in nearly 40 years, Kentucky head coach John Calipari did not receive the United States Basketball Writers Association’s Coach of the Year honor. The USBWA instead chose to go with Virginia’s Tony Bennett. Now to be fair, Bennett had a great season with the Cavaliers. Winning... Read more

Keys to breaking "Press" Virginia

03/24/2015 09:15 PM

The Mountaineers might as well be from “Press” Virginia. Thanks to its full-court defense, Bob Huggins’ squad forces the most turnovers and steals per game in the country, scoring better than 21 points per contest off its opponents’ miscues, which accounts for a whopping 28% of WVU’s total point production. However, of the 16 teams remaining, West Virginia ranks 14th in offensive efficiency, and at 53.9 points allowed, Kentucky boasts the top-scoring defense left in the tournament (only Virginia and San... Read more

What does it mean to be "Kentucky Tough"?

03/24/2015 07:14 PM

If you could only use two words, how would you describe the 2014-2015 UK basketball team? “Number One”? “Pure Perfection”? “Future Champs”? After watching the Cats grind out a physical 64-51 victory over No. 7 seed Cincinnati in the third round of the NCAA tournament, former UK guard Ravi Moss chooses “Kentucky Tough” — a trait the team will need in order to get past No. 5 seed West Virginia in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night.  Read more

Will slow starts come back to haunt UK?

03/23/2015 09:53 PM

Yes, 36-0 is still undefeated, but Kentucky’s last two wins were a little more difficult than necessary. UK’s offense was sluggish to say the least to start its first two NCAA tournament games vs. Hampton and Cincinnati. The Cats were able to recover in time in both games for eventual double-digit victories, but could another delayed launch prove to be catastrophic versus West Virginia on Thursday in the Sweet 16 or later in the tournament? KSTV spoke with Larry Glover from... Read more

What did Kentucky learn from its physical parley with Cincinnati?

03/23/2015 07:32 PM

It’s wasn’t pretty, and at times, it was even downright ugly. But once again, Kentucky found a way to win. Cincinnati tried to out-physical the No. 1 Wildcats in their second-round matchup in the NCAA tournament on Saturday, and it worked to an extent, as UK started just 3-18 from the field and finished shooting an unimpressive 37% for the game. But as they have done all season, the undefeated Cats adjusted. When the outside shots weren’t falling, Kentucky drove to the... Read more
