Western Kentucky pulls earns bowl eligibility with convincing win over North Texas. The Hilltoppers move to 6-1 and the season, and 4-0 in conference USA. The Toppers topped the Mean Green to the tune of 55-28.
The Hilltoppers jumped out to their increasingly typical first half lead early, scoring 14 points and keeping the Mean Green scoreless in the first quarter. UNT scored the first touchdown of the second quarter, but conceded 20 straight points before the next time they reached pay-dirt. WKU entered the half leading by 20.
The second half started by Western padding their lead a little more with three straight rushing touchdowns, two by Ace Wales, and one from Darmontre Warr. With a 34 point lead with less than 10 minutes to play, the Toppers conceded a couple garbage time touchdown passes to UNT quarterback DeMarcus Smith. Smith, a native of Louisville, finished the game with 228 yards passing and four passing touchdowns to go with his 122 rushing yards.
Western quarterback Brandon Doughty continues to put up remarkable stat lines. Doughty threw the for 350 yards and four TDs on just 26 completions. Wide receiver Taywan Taylor was the primary beneficiary of Doughty’s sound quarterback play. Taylor pulled in 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Ace Wales shined in the feature running back role. With D’andre Ferby sidelined due to injury, Wales tallied 193 rushing yards and a pair of rushing scores to go with 66 receiving yards and a touchdown threw the air.
The Hilltoppers now have just over a week for their toughest game of the season. WKU heads to Baton Rouge to take on Leonard Fournette and the sixth ranked LSU Tigers on Saturday, October 24.
