WKU FOOTBALL | Hilltoppers bounce back with overtime win at MTSU

It was another classic addition to the historic rivalry between Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State, as the Hilltoppers grab a 44-43 win over MTSU in double overtime.
Western had the second possession in the second overtime and trailed the Blue Raiders 43-37 after blocking the MTSU extra point. Trailing by six, quarterback Mike White calmly led the Western offense the to the MTSU one yard line where running back Anthony Wales did the heavy lifting for the touchdown. Skyler Simcox then put the PAT through the uprights to give WKU their second consecutive win over their arch rival.
Wales finished the game with 158 rushing yards and three touchdowns. White threw for 391 yards and two touchdowns, and wide receiver Taywan Taylor caught 12 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown. But the stat line that mattered most, Deon Yelder’s. He is the Hilltopper who put a hand on the MTSU extra point, to give Western a chance to win.
MTSU outpaced the WKU offense 605 yards to 521. Middle QB Brent Stockstill connected on 42-of-54 pass attempts for 434 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.
The win keeps Western’s hopes alive for a Conference USA title. The Hilltoppers are 4-3 on the season, and 2-1 in C-USA. Western returns home for next week game. An October 22 showdown in Bowling Green against Old Dominion.
