For the second time this season, Western Kentucky Men’s Basketball upset the University of Alabama-Birmingham, but this game had Conference USA title hopes on the line. Eight seeded WKU grabbed a 88-77 victory over top-seeded UAB in the opening game of today’s quarterfinal round in the C-USA tournament.

Western’s first win over UAB this season came back in January, in Bowling Green. This win took place in Birmingham with no room for error. Justin Johnson recorded the game’s lone double double, 14 points, 15 rebounds. Fredrick Edmond finished with a team high 19 points to go with seven rebounds, followed closely by senior forward Nigel Snipes with 18 points.

Western Kentucky entered halftime with an 11 point lead, stretched it to 21 with 8:28 to play, and ground out an 11 point win over the conference’s top team. Every time UAB made a run, WKU answered thanks to 52 percent shooting and out-rebounding UAB 50-28.

Western is now set for a 5:00pm ET tip with Old Dominion in the C-USA Semifinals. WKU has lost both of their regular season games against ODU by a combined 10 points.
