Western Kentucky University announced on Tuesday that it has suspended the school’s swimming and diving program for five years following an investigation of student misconduct.

According to WKU Athletic Director Todd Stewart, scholarships will be honored for current student-athletes who remain in good academic and university standing. Stewart also said transfers to other schools will be allowed for any who wish to do so.

WKU officials announced an investigation was launched following allegations made by a former team member. The Bowling Green Police Department and the school’s Title IX Coordinator found evidence of violations of the Student Code of Conduct, Discrimination and Harassment Policy and Title IX Sexual Misconduct/Assault Policy.

WKU President Gary Ransdell said the university had no choice.

“We have high standards for student conduct and conduct of our student organizations. The pervasive culture of misconduct in the swimming and diving program is intolerable. A five-year suspension is both necessary and prudent.”

WKU’s Office of Judicial Affairs will handle the matter moving forward.
