Wayne Blackshear Out With Concussion For UofL-Houston

The Louisville Cardinals will be without Wayne Blackshear when they take on Houston tomorrow night. Blackshear sustained a concussion yesterday in practice when he caught an elbow from teammate Akoy Agau, head coach Rick Pitino said.

“I think Wayne’s going to be fine. I don’t think it was a serious concussion,” Pitino said. “We’re not going to have him travel, because that takes a lot out of you. I think he’ll be fine in a couple of days.”

After losing to Cincinnati, Blackshear was back in the starting lineup against UCF, scoring 10 points and grabbing six rebounds versus the Knights. The junior from Chicago is averaging 9.7 points and 3.4 rebounds this season. Without Blackshear in the rotation, the Cards have an extremely thin margin of error tomorrow night against the Houston Cougars.

“The problem is if Montrezl gets in foul trouble, we really have major problems in this basketball game. If Luke gets in foul trouble, we have major problems in this game,” Pitino said. “On any given night, they are making shots. They can be very difficult to handle. So we’ve got to somehow get other people to step up in this game. I really don’t know who that’s going to be. I’m not sure who’s going to start or not start.”

Stephan Van Treese is the most likely replacement while Blackshear is out. The senior is averaging 4.9 rebounds and only 2.9 points per game this season. Another option is freshman Mangok Mathiang, who is averaging 4.0 points and 3.6 rebounds. But Pitino said he’s leaning toward the experienced senior.

The Cards tip off against Houston tomorrow night at 9 p.m. ET. The Cougars are on a four-game losing streak. Louisville gets an eight-day break after taking on Houston tomorrow, which will be a nice break to get the Cards’ lineup back to full health.
