UofL WOMEN'S BASKETBALL | Season comes to a sudden halt
03/20/2016 06:41 PM
DePaul’s Jessica January scored a game high 25 points with 8 rebounds, as the Blue Demons shocked third seeded Louisville, on the Cardinals’ home court, 73-72. DePaul advances to the Women’s Sweet 16 in Dallas, Texas.
Louisville got off to a quick start, leading 7-0, but the Demons went on a 13-2 run to grab the lead, and as it turned out, never giving it back. The Cards would trail by double digits, make several runs, get close, but were never able to overtake DePaul.
There were two controversial calls late in the game that went against Louisville. With 30 seconds left, Cards high scorer Briahanna Jackson (20 points, 6 rebounds)
was called for her fifth foul, a call that many thought was either a no-call or should have been charged to the Blue Demons.
And then in the final seconds, Louisville trailed by one, 73-72. The Cards got the ball into the hands of ACC Player of the year Myisha Hines-Allen, who drove towards the basket. But there was contact on the play, and officials called it a charge on Hines-Allen, effectively ending the game, as 73-72 was the final score.
Louisville finishes the season 26-8, but that includes losses in two of the Cards final 3 games including the ACC and NCAA Tournaments.
There are no seniors on the Cardinals, so in theory, every player could return. But head coach Jeff Walz wants them back not just older, but wiser.
