Red collided with Blue once again this weekend and resulted in the 10th ranked University of Louisville men’s and women’s swimming and diving team sweeping rival Kentucky. Saturday afternoon in the Ralph Wright Natatorium, the women won 190-110 while the men doubled up UK 200-100.
The Cards had multiple event winners led by Trevor Carroll’s three individual event wins (200-free, 50 free and 500 free) and the 400 yard freestyle relay. Grigory Tarasevich swept both backstroke events and was on both relay wins. Andrea Cottrell swept both breaststroke events and was on both relay wins. Carlos Claverie won both breast events and was on the winning 200-medley relay team. Kelsi Worrell won the 100-free, 100-fly and was on both winning relays. Freshman Mallory Comerford won the 200-free and the 50 free and was on the winning 400-free relay as just some of the Cardinal highlights.
After the meet, head coach Arthur Albiero said the score failed to indicate how close many of the races really were, and said the strong rivalry between the two schools brings out the best on both sides. Next up for U of L is another home meet against regional rival Indiana next weekend. That will be the final meet before the Cards head to the Conference Tournament, and Albiero said these final meets are vital for fine tuning before tournament season.
