UofL’s volleyball team captain and setter Katie George says her background in sports gave her an advantage in the Miss Kentucky Pageant. George beat out 16 other contestants Sunday night despite having never participated in a pageant before. George says she entered the competition because she thought it might help her in her pursuit of a career in broadcasting. She said, “I’m a sports girl at heart,” and “pageants are never something I thought I would be interested in.” She credits her ability to shake off her nervousness to her sports background. As an active collegiate athlete, she feels she had an advantage in her ability to control her emotions under pressure.
Katie has already proven her competitive edge on the court. She was named to the First Team All ACC and started every game this year, as a Junior. When it came to the Miss Kentucky pageant, Katie also felt her status as a newcomer in the world of beauty pageants allowed for “genuineness in her performance.” Katie says she can’t wait to represent her state, and her school in the Miss USA pageant later this year.
