UofL Football | Bad luck leads to another close loss

09/19/2015 10:30 AM

The Louisville Cardinals are 0-3. Yet the total margin of victory for all games is just 13 points. Think about it, two touchdowns is the difference between a winless record and an undefeated mark.

UofL has had its share of bad luck, but a lot of it was concentrated near the end of the 20-17 loss to Clemson Thursday night. The Cardinals were driving in the final seconds when they: took a quarterback sack with no time outs left, which allowed the clock to continue running. The Cards chose not to spike the ball on third down to kill the clock, deciding instead to throw a Hail Mary with 12 seconds to go. It was intercepted. The long pass in essence killed the remaining time off the clock.

UofL was on the 41 yard line line for the last play of the game . If the Cards had spiked the ball on third down, going for a potential game tying field goal, it would have been a 58 yards kick. John Wallace, who had earlier missed a 38 yard field goal, has never kicked a field goal longer than 58 yards. The odds were against him.

Ultimately, Louisville could not get that last score and now has fallen to 0-3 for the first time since 1984. The Cards host Samford next Saturday at 6pm.
