UofL distance runner Tyler Byrne hopes to go all the way

06/11/2014 10:00 AM

The UofL baseball players are not the only Cardinals going after a national championship. Four track and field athletes have qualified for the national championships which run Wednesday through Friday in Oregon. Brittany Owens will compete in the women’s long jump, Calvin Arsenault is in the 400 meter hurdles, Edwin Kibichiy competes in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, while distance runner Tyler Byrne will be running 10,000 meters.

Byrne says his race can be demanding not just physically (25 laps around a standard track) but mentally as well, as athletes need to stay focused for almost a half hour.

Byrne is excited to be ending his season and to be graduating academically as well. He has his strategy set when his event starts Wednesday night.
