Charlie Strong met with reporters on Monday to preview this week’s home game against Syracuse at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. Strong opened the conference by recapping the Cards’ 16-14 home win over Rutgers on Friday night. The coach says that despite their big win, Syracuse is an opponent that should not be taken lightly.
Strong also addressed the status of senior cornerback Anthony Conner, who suffered a broken neck while making a tackle during the Rutgers game. The coach was informed of the extent of Conner’s injury late in the fourth quarter and then told the rest of the team in the locker room following the game.
The coach also looked at the ever-changing Big East title race. Cincinnati is the only remaining unbeaten team in the Big East. Rutgers is second at 2-1, while Louisville, Syracuse, West Virginia, Connecticut and Pittsburgh are in a five-way tie for third.
This weekend the Cards will be looking for consecutive Big East victories for the first time since 2006. The last time the Cardinals enjoyed any streak of Big East success was in Bobby Petrino’s final year when they were 6-1 with consecutive victories over South Florida, Pittsburgh and Connecticut.
