UofL BASKETBALL | Pitino evaluates Notre Dame, says Mangok will not return this season

02/12/2016 07:00 PM

The 13th ranked University of Louisville Men’s Basketball team has a tall task Saturday afternoon when they take on Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.

The Irish are in the “receiving votes” category of the Associated Press rankings, and could be considered the 28th best team in the nation if the rankings officially extended that far. They are scoring just over half point more per game than U of L, 79.0 compared to 78.4. They connect on 38 percent of their 3-point attempts, and feature
one of the “premier point guards in the nation” according to Louisville head coach Rick Pitino in junior PG Demetrius Jackson.

This will be the second straight hostile road environment for the Cards, who are coming off a close loss at Duke, 72-65. The Irish are 12-1 at Purcell Pavilion this season, and playing some of their best basketball of the season lately with a win over 9th ranked North Carolina, and a Monday night road win at Clemson. U of L leads the all-time series over Notre Dame 20-13, but have only won four of their 11 games in South Bend.

The game tips off at 4:00 pm ET, and can be seen on ESPN 2.

At his pregame press conference today, Pitino still talked game strategy and scouting reports, albeit without the same vigor as when his team still had postseason hopes. He emphasized that he is taking a lighthearted approach to recent film sessions and team practices. He also reported that red-shirt junior Mangok Mathiang will not return to play this season after breaking a bone in his foot earlier in the season.
