Damion Lee came off one of his worst performances as a Card, by registering one of his best. The graduate guard scored a game high 24 points as Louisville upset 2nd ranked North Carolina, 71-65. The result ends UNC’s 12 game winning streak, giving the Heels their first ACC loss, and helping the Cardinals get past last Saturday’s embarrassing home loss to Virginia.
The Cards fell behind by six in the first half, before making a late run, and taking a one point lead, 28-27, into the break. Louisville never trailed after the 15:51 mark of the second half, although the game stayed close, with neither team able to stretch the lead to double digits.
For the third straight game, Chinanu Onuaku got into first half foul trouble and was forced to sit for much of the half. However, the sophomore was still able to finish with a double-double, for the seventh time in nine games, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds. Donovan Mitchell was the only other Card in double figures, as the freshman finished with 10. Justin Jackson led UNC with 16 points.
With the win, 19th ranked Louisville improves to 18-4, 7-2 in the ACC. The victory keeps the Cards in second place in the league, just a game behind the first place Heels who fall to 19-3, 8-1.
Both Louisville and North Carolina were playing just two days after their respective Saturday games. However the advantage now is that both teams have the rest of the week to recover and prepare for their next opponents. For Louisville, that’s a Saturday home game (12pm ET) against Boston College, followed by a Monday Night road game at an unranked Duke. The Heels are at Notre Dame on Saturday night.
