05/15/2016 04:10 PM

Saturday Senior Kyle Funkhouser walked in his cap and gown in UofL’s graduation ceremonies and Sunday he took the mound to start Senior Day at Patterson Stadium. The final score was 6-1 Louisville, giving Kyle Funkhouser his 33rd win.

Cards’ Coaches, players and fans took time before the game to honor the three seniors Danny Rosenbaum, Anthony Kidston and Funkhouser, who passed up the opportunity in the draft last year to return to UofL in the hopes of winning a college world series. The players and coach spoke after the game about how great it was that each senior contributed to the win.

Funkhouser kept the No. 10 NC State Wolfpack scoreless in the first. An RBI by Brendan McKay followed up by an RBI from Sophomore Devin Hairston puts two on the board for the Cards in the bottom of the first.
Freshman Drew Ellis got his third home run of the season, this one shot to left field. By the end of the second the Cards scored 4 runs on 3 hits, bringing the score to Louisville 6, NC State 0.
After scoreless third, fourth and fifth innings Kyle Funkhouser delivered his 7th strikeout of the day in the 6th. Junior Corey Ray got a double on a hit to right field but was stranded there to end the 6th.

Funkhouser ended the top of the 7th with his 100th pitch and a 7-inning shutout, allowing just two hits. He received a standing ovation at the top of the 8th to honor his 359 all time strikeouts and his status as all time wins leader for the Cards. Funkhouser then turned the mound over to Freshman Stan Bordner.

The Wolfpack got their first run of the day when Evan Mendoza shot one to the left getting a single RBI. That forced a Cards pitching change. Freshman Adam Wolf finished out the top of the 8th with a breaking ball strikeout that kept the Cards lead at 6-1.

Cards Senior Anthony Kidston took the mound in the 9th and got two strikeouts, bringing his total to 186. Corey Ray brought the fans to their feet when he caught a fly ball and brought home the sweep.
