Friday was a pretty good day for the Virginia Cavaliers. The basketball team advanced to the Elite 8, by beating Iowa State 84-71. Meanwhile in Louisville, the Cardinals baseball team dropped the opener of a three game series to the defending national champion Cavs. Virginia beating UofL 6-3.

Louisville got on the board first, in the second inning, as Devin Hairston singled in Brendan McKay for the 1-zip lead. That disappeared quickly in the third, as Virginia’s Matt Thaiss took a Kyle Funkhouser pitcher deep into the night for a three run homer. Virginia would never give up the lead again, adding another three run homer in the seventh, courtesy Pavin Smith.

The loss is the third in five games for Louisville. The Cards record drops to 17-5 overall, 4-3 in the ACC, while Virginia improves to 17-6, and 5-2. The two teams meet up again Saturday at 1pm, with the finale set for Sunday afternoon at one.
