University of Louisville shocked: Houston wins 34-31

Houston Quarterback Greg Ward Junior hit Demarcus Ayers on a 15 yard touchdown pass with 3:09 left in the game, as the Cougars came into Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium, and shocked Louisville 34-31. The Cards had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but John Wallace’s 53 yard field goal, was partially blocked and fell short.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson was hot and cold, as you would expect of a true freshman. He completed 17 of 27 passes for 168 yards, with a passing and a rushing touchdown, but he also threw a pair of interceptions. Jackson was relieved in the 4th quarter by sophomore Kyle Bolin who went 10 of 18 for 157 yards and a touchdown. Afterwards Petrino summed up the day of his Freshman QB.

When asked who would be the starting QB for Thursday night’s game at Clemson, Petrino said, “that’s a good question. I wish I had an answer.”

Here is the complete Bobby Petrino Press Conference.

Houston wound up with 462 yards of total offense, thanks in part to lots of missed tackles by the Louisville defense. Louisville is 0-2 for the first time since 1998. If there is a silver lining to UofL’s start, it’s that both losses were to non-conference opponents. The Cards can still win the ACC. It starts Thursday night in the nationally televised conference opener against 12th ranked Clemson.
