On Monday night, University of Kentucky women’s soccer player Arin Gilliland will receive the 2014 Inspiration Award at THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presented by Honda (CWSA) in Los Angeles.

Gilliland will travel to the awards ceremony from Ottawa, Canada where she plays for the Ottawa Fury in the W-league, a North American pro-am soccer league. And even though she’s been out of the states, Gilliland says she hasn’t missed a chance to cheer on the USA in the World Cup. She says she’s confident USA will do well if they take the rest of the tournament one game at a time.

“I honestly didn’t think they would make it out of their group because of the pure talent of those teams,” Gilliland said. “But the U.S. always finds a way. They are the definition of a blue collar team and will always find a way to pull through.”

Gilliland says that although advancing past the Group of Death is cause to celebrate, the team must keep their eyes on the prize and not lose focus.

“Soccer is baby steps, so it was enough to get out of the Group of Death but now they have to put that behind them and focus on the next game because Belgium is not going to be easy.”
