Two Lexington schools playing for more than bragging rights

Paul Laurence Dunbar in Lexington is playing cross-town rival Lexington Catholic tomorrow night for a much larger purpose than pride. Tomorrow night marks the inaugural Bennett Lester Classic, an annual meeting between the two schools that is dedicated to raising money in support of children’s cancer research and families dealing with children with cancer.

The namesake of the event, Bennett Lester, is the three year old daughter of William (a Lexington Catholic Graduate) and Katie Anne Lester (Dunbar Graduate) who passed away this October after being diagnosed with a rare brain tumor.

The game will be played at Lexington Catholic High School, and funds raised will support The Curious Edge Foundation, Inc., a corporation acting as seed money for a foundation being set up in honor of Bennett Lester. We spoke to one of the people responsible for getting the Bennett Lester Classic off the ground, Lester family friend Kip Wellman who says support for the event and the Lester family has been “absolutely unbelievable.”
