Two down, one to go for California Chrome
05/17/2014 05:43 PM
California Chrome came into the 139th Preakness Stakes as the overwhelming favorite, and the California based colt did not disappoint. The Kentucky Derby winner is now the 34th horse to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown.
Chrome had a great start, was in perfect position throughout the race, and when jockey Victor Espinoza let his horse go full blast, California Chrome was not to be caught. The unofficial time was 1:54.84. Ride on Curlin finished second, with Social Inclusion coming third.
Only 11 horses have ever won the Triple Crown. In three weeks at the Belmont, California Chrome tries to become the 12th. No horse has won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont since Affirmed back in 1978.
