The WNBA draft was full of Cards last night. Louisville was the only school to have three players selected, and they were three good ones. Guard Shoni Shimmel was selected 8th overall by the Atlanta Dream. Shoni will join another former Cardinal great Angel McCoughtry. Shimmel is only the second woman to score over 2,000 points in her career as a Cardinal, finishing with 2,174. Second only to McCoughtry

With the 35th overall pick the Los Angeles Sparks selected guard Anonita Slaughter, who later tweeted,” WOW! I’m really suppose to sleep after that?!” Slaughter will join Jennifer Hamson, the 6’7” center from BYU who was selected 27th overall to reshape the look of the Sparks next season.

And with the 36th, and final, pick of the night 6’1” forward Asia Taylor was selected by the Minnesota Lynx. Asia took to twitter shortly thereafter and tweeted, “IVE BEEN DRAFTEDDDD!!!! THIS IS UNREALLLLLL! Proud to be apart of the Minnesota Lynx !!! #BLESSED.”

UK senior forward DeNesha Stallworth was taken by the Connecticut Sun with the 25th pick in the draft. Stallworth was the third player taken by the Connecticut, who also took Stanford’s Chiney Ogwumike with the number one overall pick

The WNBA kicks off their preseason games starting May 2nd.
