He was an icon in professional wrestling. Virgil Runnels, better known as the American Dream Dusty Rhodes, died Thursday at the age of 69.
Rhodes never had the muscled look of your typical pro wrestler. In fact he was described as rotund. Yet Dusty was one of the most popular wrestlers in the business dating back to the 1970’s. And it was all because of his “gift for gab.”
Rhodes on a mic, was considered money in a promoter’s pockets. The American Dream was a good guy for most of his career, so most of the time he would do fiery interviews vowing revenge for a previous nasty deed. It was a formula the made Rhodes very popular and very powerful in he business.
Longtime Wrestling reporter, announcer, and columnist Chris Shore discusses how Dusty legacy will live on in wrestling.
