Former St. X and current WKU reliever Ian Tompkins was selected in the 14th round of the MLB Draft on Saturday by the Kansas City Royals.

The Louisville native was WKU’s closer this past season leading the Sun Belt Conference in saves with 14; a WKU single season record. For the season, Tompkins struck out 46 hitters in just 26 innings pitched giving him 161 strikeouts in 117 total innings pitched for his career. Those career totals rank Tompkins third among active NCAA pitchers with a mark of 12.38 career strikeouts per nine innings.

The lefty will join former WKU players Andrew Edwards, Ryan Huck, Phil Wetherell, Kes Carter, Terrence Dayleg and Wade Gaynor as active Hilltoppers in the professional ranks
