Rory McIlroy from Valhalla: I'm coming in here with a lot of confidence

Valhalla opened today with a Rory McIlroy press conference during which the PGA champ said he’s feeling confident about his golf game.

“It’s been a great few weeks. My game feels in really good shape, obviously, and I’m coming in here with a lot of confidence. Historically, the PGA Championship has probably been my best major.”

McIlroy says he’s worked hard in the gym to put on weight and try to hit the ball further, which has helped his game.

“I don’t feel like I need to add more distance. The last couple of weeks is the best I’ve driven,” said McIlroy. He added that he’s put on about three kgs of muscle during the past eight weeks.

Coming off a win at Firestone, McIlroy decided to give himself some rest yesterday.

“I gave myself yesterday off, which I felt like I needed just to recharge a little bit. I think emotionally and mentally it’s more fatiguing after you win tournaments than it is physically.”

As for his mentality going into Valhalla, McIlroy said, “I’ll just try to play golf similar to what I have the last few weeks.”
