Rick Pitino on UofL's Win Over Bellarmine

9th ranked UofL beat Bellarmine Thursday at the KFC YUM! Center 62-54. The Cards were led by Jared Swopshire and Chane Behanan, who both scored 14 points and landed 9 rebounds. UofL coach Rick Pitino says he was grateful for the chance to play Bellarmine, who are ranked number 1 in division 2 men’s basketball.

Louisville played without 5 of its important players. Peyton Siva, Wayne Blackshear, Stephen Van Treese, Mike Marra and Rakeem Buckles are all out with injuries. And Pitino says that put him in a horrible position as a coach.

Sophomore guard Russ Smith gave Louisville some instant offense in the first half by scoring eight quick points in 14 first-half minutes. Despite the effort, Pitino says Smith still has a lot of work ahead of him.

The Cards next game is their season opener hosting Tennessee Martin. Pitino says Siva will likely be back for that game.
