The Cardinals won its first exhibition of the new pre-season Wednesday, beating defending NAIA national champion Pikeville 74-55. Chane Behanan, who coach Rick Pitino called the best freshman he’s coached since Jamal Mashburn, had 16 points and seven rebounds, while Georgi Dieng added 14 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks.
Freshman Wayne Blackshear also made his highly anticipated debut. Blackshear didn’t play all summer due to a shoulder injury and was just cleared for practice this week. And the rust showed as he went scoreless in 15 minutes. Pitino said it will take six weeks for Blackshear to get back to the player he was in high school.
Pitino also stressed the importance of Kyle Kuric and Chris Smith to his team.
The storied coach says his first five players are much better than the rest of the club right now, so he’s a bit hesitant to mix it up.
The Cards next outing takes place November 3rd when they host defending division 2 national champion Bellarmine.
