Reds run away with 5-2 victory over Pirates

Billy Hamilton and Jay Bruce got it done in style last night as the Reds beat the Pirates for the second straight night; 5-2. The duo combined for 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.

The Reds employed an aggressive style of play on the base paths last night. Going from first to third when they could and putting pressure on the catcher all night stealing 4 bases in 5 attempts.

“In many ways, it forced their pitchers to have to be a little bit more concerned with our running game and hold the ball and step off and throw over and quicken up their deliveries,” Manager Brian Price said. “That benefits us if they’re getting uncomfortable on the mound, having to rush themselves to the plate or what might be. We want to take advantage of anything that’s out there, and these guys have been aggressive.”

Alfredo Simon, continuing to fill in for the injured Matt Latos, gave up 2 runs on 4 hits over 6.2 innings and struck out 4 to pick up his third win of the season.

“We took advantage of the opportunities that were presented to us,” said Bruce. “This is a team that might not give you a lot at times. You have to take advantage of them and tonight we did.”

Jonathan Broxton came on to pitch a scoreless 9th inning to pick up his third save of the year. First-year manager Brian Price couldn’t have been happier with his team’s performance. “Great win. Both pitching staffs really held the offense down as far as multiple-hit innings and things of that nature. We were really able to scratch out our runs.”

Cincinnati closes out their four-game series with Pittsburgh this afternoon as the Reds send southpaw Tony Cingrani to the mound to take on Brandon Cumpton. With a victory today Cincinnati will claim the four-game series against Pittsburgh. First pitch is scheduled for 12:35 p.m. and can be seen on FOX Sports Ohio, TWC channel 55/930.
