Pitino shooting for winners circle

UofL head basketball coach Rick Pitino will be at Churchill Downs for the first Friday in May to watch his new horse, Empress of Midway, run for the lillies.

Empress of Midway is trained by Doug O’Neill, the trainer of Pitino’s Derby horse last year, Goldencents. The purchase was announced today by O’Neill’s stable.
Pitino has had an ownership stake in two different Derby horses. Last year’s Goldencents and 1998 fourth place finisher Halory Hunter. This will be Pitino’s first Oaks runner.

Empress of Midway entered the day below the number of Oaks qualifying points but made the field after it was announced that both In Tune and Room Service would not be running.
