NCAA Denies Rakeem Buckles' Appeal
09/04/2013 10:50 AM
The NCAA denied Rakeem Buckles’ appeal to play basketball at Minnesota this year.
Buckles played two seasons at UofL before transferring to Florida International to join new head coach Richard Pitino. He then sat out due to NCAA transfer rules. But during that time, Pitino was hired at Minnesota and Florida International was issued a one-year post-season ban due to infractions under former head coach Isiah Thomas. Buckles issued a request to play citing an NCAA rule which permits seniors playing for a team under a post-season ban to transfer and be eligible immediately. Buckles request was denied. A request submitted by teammate Malik Smith was approved, allowing him to transfer to Minnesota.
As a result of the denied appeal, Buckles must return to Florida International and play his senior season as a walk on. A scholarship is no longer available.
