Ludwick drives in two as Reds win three in a row

Reds southpaw Tony Cingrani overcame a rough first inning to shut down the Pirates at PNC Park. Needing 32 pitches just to get out of the bottom of the first, Cingrani gave up one run. Then, it was lights out the rest of the way. For the day, he went six innings, giving up six hits and one run while striking out seven. Six hits is the most he has surrendered in his 23-game major league career.

“I was a little upset with that first inning,” said Cingrani, who improved to 2-2 on the season. “I threw the ball a little better than I did the last time. My mechanics are getting a little bit more repeatable, but I still have a little ways to go.”

After losing the series opener on Monday, the Reds took three straight from the Pirates to move to 11-11 on the season. It’s the first time Cincinnati has been at .500 since the 2nd game of the season.

Left fielder Ryan Ludwick provided all the offense the Reds would need, driving in Joey Votto and Todd Frazier with a two-out double in the 6th. After that, the bullpen held the lead the rest of the way with closer Jonathan Broxton picking up his fourth save of the season.

“Three series [wins] in a row, back to .500,” said Ludwick. “The pitching was outstanding today. Pitching wins championships. Those guys did an outstanding job. We keep getting pitching like that, we’ll be back in this thing in a hurry.”

The Reds are in Atlanta Friday for the start of a three-game series against the East leading Braves. Righty Homer Bailey will get the start for Cincinnati. This will be Bailey’s first start since blanking the Cubs through six on Sunday while striking out 8. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. and will be televised on Fox Sports South, TWC channel 55/930.
