The past few weeks have been a whirlwind for the Louisville basketball program, but the Cardinals picked a perfect time to pull it together as they upset second-ranked Virginia, 59-57.
With under a minute to go, UVA hit a go-ahead three to take a one-point lead, but the Cards were not going to be denied. With 2.7 seconds left, Mangok Mathiang connected on a mid-range jumper, reclaiming the UofL lead for good. It was Mathiang’s only basket on the night, but it is also the only one that mattered.
For Montrezl Harrell and Wayne Blackshear, it was a perfect ending. The two were honored in Senior Night ceremonies and they went out with a bang. Harrell led all scorers with 20 points and added 12 rebounds for the double-double. Blackshear struggled with his shot, going just 4-14 for nine points, but his triple to begin the contest got the Cards rolling.
Terry Rozier and Quentin Snider were the only other UofL players in double-figures, scoring 11 points apiece.
The win improves Louisville’s record to 24-7 (12-6 ACC) and secures a double-bye in the conference tournament. The Cards will return to the court Thursday at 2 p.m. ET, with North Carolina being the likely opponent.
