Louisville to play Georgia in the Belk Bowl

For Louisville fans hoping for an easy trip down Interstate 65 to the Music City Bowl, Sunday’s announcement that the Cards are heading to the Belk Bowl might be disappointing. But for those hoping to play a quality team in a game full of story lines, the post season match-up against Georgia is great.

When the teams take the field in Charlotte, NC Tuesday, December 30, it will be a reunion of sorts for Todd Grantham and UGA. Grantham was the Bulldogs defensive coordinator for four years before leaving this past off-season to join Bobby Petrino’s staff. In his first year with the Cards, Grantham’s defense has been one of the nation’s best. But in Athens, Georgia fans grew tired of their former coordinator, and there was no love lost when he opted to moved on.

Speaking of defense, UofL boasts the number three rushing D in the country, allowing just 93.7 yards per game. Georgia averages 255 rushing yards and 41.7 points an outing, so this game will be a test of strength versus strength.

On the offensive side of the ball, the picture remains cloudy for the Cards. Either Reggie Bonnafon (bowl status unclear) or Kyle Bolin could be the starter at quarterback, but it is a tough match-up no matter who UofL places under center. Georgia’s passing defense ranks second in FBS, giving up only 158 yards per game. That said, the Bulldogs have not faced an elite receiver like DeVante Parker.

Strictly looking at the numbers, it appears to be an interesting match-up for both teams with Louisville’s staunch defense squaring off against Georgia’s high-powered offense. Add in the Todd Grantham connection, and this should be a fun few weeks leading up to the Belk Bowl.
