The Saint Xavier Tigers opened their 2015 football season with a 40-13 win over Lexington Henry Clay in Lexington Catholic’s Bluegrass Bowl.
St. X junior quarterback Desmond Ridder made a stellar debut in the starting spot by accounting for 3 of the team’s 5 touchdowns. Ridder was most impressive rushing the ball, gaining 151 yards on 12 carries for two of his touchdowns. His third came on a 23 yard pass to senior Trey Clements. Ridder was 13 for 26 and 126 yards in the air.
Not to be outdone, St. X’s senior running back Chase Rowan scored a touchdown with 96 yards on 10 carries. The majority of those came in the first half, as Rowan only saw a few touches after halftime. Sam Taylor also added a 9-yard touchdown run.
Henry Clay struggled against the Tiger defense as well. St. X junior linebacker Jack Kronk got things started with a safety early in the game. Henry Clay senior receiver and UK commit Davonte Robinson didn’t fare any better, getting the ball stripped for a turnover by St. X linebacker Logan Butler and then fumbling again on the next possession.
The Blue Devils did manage to score two touchdowns, both by senior Austin Bledsoe, but it was too late, after falling into a 30-0 hole early in the first half.
There was a scary moment in the second half, when St. X junior Braidon Washburn collided with another player. Play was halted 20 minutes, as he was carted off and taken to the hospital by ambulance. Reports are that the trip was precautionary, and Washburn is doing fine with just a stinger.
St. X returns next week with their home debut against 5A rival Bowling Green. The Tigers seek to turn around a 4-game losing streak to the Purples. Henry Clay also makes their home debut next week when they host George Rogers Clark.
Desmond Ridder throws a touchdown pass and then closes out the game with his final touchdown run.
