Louisville City FC’s quest for a USL championship came to an end on Sunday evening, falling in penalty kicks to New York Red Bulls II in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The conference’s top-seed NYRBII topped the conference’s second-seed LouCity 4-3 during the shootout. The match was tied 1-1 after regulation and extra time.

NYRBII goalkeeper Ryan Meara made two saves in the shootout. He blocked LCFC’s Cameron Lancaster during LouCity’s first penalty kick attempt. Meara then blocked Ben Newnam on the team’s fifth PK attempt. That save clinched the game for the home team.

In regulation, LCFC scored quickly in the match, courtesy of an 11th-minute goal by Paco Craig. New York responded in the 74th-minute thanks to an equalizer by Florian Valot.

It was the second straight postseason match NYRBII has had to win in a shootout.

New York Red Bulls II will face Swope Park in the USL Cup Final next Sunday.
