Tipping off a return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008, the 15 seed Lady Toppers came out strong against second-seeded Baylor. However, the Lady Bears’ home court advantage and 30-plus point performances by Odyssey Sims and Nina Davis were too much for Western to overcome.
The Lady Toppers played hard throughout the first half, trailing the Lady Bears by just six points, 47-41.
Junior forward Chasity Gooch led the team with 23 points and 9 rebounds and freshman guard Kendall Noble led with 7 assists and 3 steals.
The loss marked the Lady Toppers’ final game as members of the Sunbelt Conference as they prepare for Conference USA next season.
The Lady Bears earned a win despite the absence of Lady Bears Head Coach Kim Mulkey who was serving a one-game NCAA suspension for her criticism of the officiating during the 2013 Sweet Sixteen match-up between the Bears and the Lady Cardinals.
Baylor advances to the second round of the women’s NCAA tournament and will play Cal on Monday.
