A hairline fracture to his front cannon bone will keep Florida Derby winner Constitution out of The Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands.

Trainer Todd Pletcher was breezing Constitution on Monday at a training track in Florida when he noticed the horse was “off” in his right front leg. X-rays later revealed the fracture in the cannon bone.

“Thankfully, it’s nothing very serious, and Constitution will be back to 100 [percent] after a little time. The timing is just a real shame for everyone involved, but the Derby doesn’t define a horse’s career.” Pletcher said in a news release.

Despite the loss of Constitution Pletcher is expected to enter Danza, We Miss Artie and Intense Holiday in the Derby. Pletcher trained 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver.

Constitution will be shipped to WinStar Farms in Versailles to rehabilitate and is expected to return to training in 60 days with the hopes of racing later this year. The colt, out of Tapit, has a perfect 3-0 record including his victory in the March 29th Florida Derby.

WinStar President Elliott Walden added, “Todd [Pletcher] has done a tremendous job with Constitution and I can’t wait to get him back for two reasons: firstly, he has so much to accomplish; and secondly, he is the most exciting stallion prospect of his generation.”
