HS BASKETBALL | Dunbar brings state title to Lexington with win over Doss
03/20/2016 05:55 PM
Unlike every other game they’ve played in this year’s KHSAA Sweet Sixteen, Paul Laurence Dunbar led the entire way against Doss in today’s championship game, beating the Dragons 61-52.
In front of a crowd of 10,091 at Rupp Arena, the Bulldogs opened the game with a 15-2 run, and that buffer would carry them to victory. Dunbar had three players finish in double digit scoring, led by junior guard Taveion Hollingsworth with 20 points and eight rebounds. Hollingsworth was named tournament MVP after averaging 20+ points through all four games. Darius Williams netted 15 points for Dunbar, and center Dontell Brown added 11 to go with eight rebounds.
Dunbar was the highest ranked team in this year’s Sweet Sixteen, but had found themselves trailing in each of their three games leading into today’s championship matchup. The Bulldogs carried a 15 point lead into half time, and would then stretch out to 21 points shortly into the fourth quarter.
This was Dunbar’s first state title, and they are the first Lexington school to win the championship since Lafayette in 2001.
Doss made a push in the closing minutes of the game, but the Dunbar lead was simply too much to overcome. Dragons’ guard Kenyi Bryant was the game high scorer with 23 points.
