Howard Schnellenberger Award to Honor UK / UofL Football MVP
09/11/2013 11:00 AM
For the fourth year in a row, the Louisville Sports Commission will present its Howard Schnellenberger MVP Award following Saturday’s Governor’s Cup.
The honor will be awarded to the most valuable player on the winning team after the annual rivalry game between UofL and UK.
The Howard Schnellenberger MVP award was created in 2010 by the Louisville Sports Commission and its recipient is selected by a vote of the working press covering the game.
Schenllenberger is a Louisville native and was recruited to UK by the legendary Bear Bryant. He later served as an assistant coach at UK and head coach at UofL for 10 years. Schnellenberger is the only person honored in the athletic halls of fame at both the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.
Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater received the MVP honor following last year’s Governor’s Cup, after completing 19-21 passes for 232 yards and no interceptions. He also set a UofL single-game record by completing 90.5 percent of his passes.
The award will be presented on the field immediately after the game. Kick off for this year’s Governor’s Cup is set for noon on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium. cn|2 Sports and KSTV will broadcast live coverage previewing the game at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
