Good news for Bengals; Atkins cleared to practice

Defensive tackle Geno Atkins was removed from the PUP list today and has been cleared for practice, according to espn.com

Atkins had 20 tackles and six sacks for the Bengals when he suffered a season-ending ACL tear last season in Miami on Halloween.

Atkins’s return is a sight for sore eyes for several of his teammates, including fellow defensive tackle Domata Peko.

“Teams are always going to have to respect him because he can change the whole game,” Peko said. “A lot of teams game plan just for [No.] 97, just for Geno. He’s a hell of a disruptive player.”

Returning in just nine months is no small feat and the Bengals will be cautious in getting Atkins back in football shape. Head coach Marvin Lewis does expect Geno to be available for the first game of the season Sept. 7 in Baltimore.
