Former Western Kentucky football player Tyler Higbee has been released from the Warren County Jail following his arrest on charges of assault and intoxication.

According to a police report, 23-year-old Higbee was taken into custody early Sunday morning after allegedly punching a man, Nawaf Alsaleh, and knocking him unconscious in the parking lot outside Tidballs bar in Bowling Green. The report indicates that Higbee was intoxicated at the time and fled the scene. Witnesses told police that the altercation followed racial slurs towards the victim.

Higbee, who participated in WKU’s Pro Day in March, now faces charges of second degree assault, alcohol intoxication in a public place and fleeing and evading police. A court date has been set for May 5.

Higbee was invited to the February NFL Combine, although he could not participate because of a knee injury. He is considered an NFL-caliber tight end by many scouts. Higbee played in only nine games his senior season because of injuries, but still caught 38 passes for 563 yards and eight touchdowns for a WKU team that won the Conference USA Championship and Miami Beach Bowl, and finished ranked 24th in the Final AP Poll.

cn|2 Sports has reached out to Higbee’s representation, but has not yet received a response. A current NFL coach weighs in on Higbee’s NFL future on cn|2 Sports, Monday at 6:30 and 10:30 p.m. ET
