Western Kentucky came out strong against Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday night in Bowling Green after the longest break of the season.
The team dressed out in all black uniforms and fans were encouraged to wear black to the game in what Western designated as a Black Out game. The Toppers earned their first touchdown early in the first quarter. Then, a 29-yard field goal extended Western’s lead 10-0. Louisiana-Lafayette had 0 passing yards for the entire quarter.
A 100-yard pick six by ULL’s Al Riles turned the game in the second quarter. The drive put the Ragin’ Cajuns on the board, 10-7. WKU QB Brandon Doughty’s pass to Mitchell Henry was stripped and recovered by ULL and returned for 45 yards. The turnover led to a 35-yard drive, ending with a 1-yard TD run by Alonzo Harris.
Western and Louisiana-Lafayette would go to the half tied, 13-13.
The Ragin’ Cajuns dominated the third quarter, taking a 16-13 lead in the beginning after a 23-yard field goal.
Western Kentucky started the fourth quarter trailing ULL 23-13 and with a different quarterback. Doughty and sophomore quarterback Nelson Fishback rotated throughout the quarter. The Toppers were unable to mount a comeback. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ came out on top, 37-20.
The win puts Louisiana-Lafayette one step closer to a Sun Belt Conference championship title. The Toppers must now look ahead to their next opponent, Troy. The game will also be Western’s homecoming game. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, October 26 in Bowling Green.
Western RB Antonio Andrews became the first player in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to reach 1,000 yards rushing this season. He finished with 154 yards on 28 carries.
