On Monday, Eastern Kentucky University confirmed that redshirt freshman defensive lineman Joey Kraemer was killed in a car accident over the weekend.
The single-vehicle accident happened on Tates Creek Road in Madison County.
Kraemer, 19, had transferred to EKU from the University of Texas El Paso where he redshirted as a freshman last season. Kraemer was eligible to play at EKU but had not played in the Colonels’ first three games.
“The news that we lost one of our own is devastating to me, our team and our coaches,” said Head Coach Dean Hood. “We pray that God will give strength to Joey’s family during their time of mourning. Joey will truly be missed by all of us he touched, not only because of what he accomplished on the football field, but because of who he was as a person and the impact he made on our lives.”
EKU will face the University of Kentucky on Saturday in Lexington. During his weekly press conference on Monday, UK Head Coach Mark Stoops said an effort to honor Kraemer during the game has his “full support.”
