CHURCHILL DOWNS | Derby Wagering Increases Purses For Spring Meet

06/01/2016 02:10 PM

A record 266.8 million dollars was wagered during the first week of racing at Churchill Downs, April 30-May 7, for the Spring Meet which culminated with the 142nd Running of The Kentucky Derby. The amount broke the previous mark set in 2015.

With the increase in wagering dollars Churchill will now be increasing their purses paid out by 4% through the end of the Spring Meet which runs through July 2nd.

The Derby itself accounted for almost half of the total take for Derby Week 2016 as it saw 124.7 million dollars wagered on that raise alone. However, that total was down 10% from the 139.7 million wagered in 2015 when American Pharoah took the roses on his way to becoming the first triple crown winner in over 30 years.
