Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, has announced plans to upgrade the legendary track as part of an extensive $18 million capital project.

The project is the latest in a series of ongoing investments meant to improve and enhance the customer experience at Churchill Downs. Track officials have committed $69.4 million to major capital improvements on the national historical landmark over the last six years.

Total reserved seating for Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day in 2016 will increase from 57,880 to 58,654. Interior renovations will begin immediately after the conclusion of the 21-day Fall Meet, which runs November 1-29. The project is scheduled for completion in advance of the 2016 Spring Meet, which will open Saturday, April 30, 2016.

The upgrades announced on Tuesday will include:

Stakes Room

A new and enlarged Stakes Room on the fourth floor of the Clubhouse, which will combine the current Stakes Room with the Aristides Room, Directors’ Room and Turf Club Lounge.

Turf Club

Décor upgrades to the third floor Turf Club, Matt Winn Dining Room and Indoor Premium Boxes to celebrate the tradition of the track.

Turf Club Draftsman Balcony

The new Turf Club will include a newly-constructed balcony that will feature a spectacular vantage point of pre-race activity in the Paddock.

Turf Club Roses Lounge

The new Turf Club Roses Lounge will feature a new bar, banquette seating and individual dining tables.

Turf Club Boxes

Formerly the Indoor Premium Boxes, the Turf Club Boxes will be remodeled with classic white timber and seating for 6-10 guests – banquette-style upholstered seating in the back and comfortable padded chairs in the front.

Directors Room

The private Directors Room, one of the most exclusive hospitality rooms at Churchill Downs, will be relocated from the fourth floor to the third floor in a newly-constructed space above the Gate 17 entrance.

Clubhouse Balconies

Premium seating will be added to the fourth and fifth floor balconies for clear views of the racing and Paddock action and an up-close backdrop of the Twin Spires.
